XX? - THE HOUSE OF SEVEN GABLES - Nathaniel Hawthorne

Am I just not getting it? By the third chapter, I felt like I had spent a weekend at a family reunion, but it wasn't my own family. Strangers converged upon me like ants on spilled soda. Names engulfed my thoughts. A chronic feeling of "What the?" fell over me.

Try, try again? Or pitch across the room (again)?

Hi Kristin, life is too short. Toss it away and start something else. I refuse to keep going on a book that I can't get into, and there have been so many.

Between "The Birth Mark" and The Scarlet Letter I have never felt much desire to revisit Hawthorne. Sounds like I wasn't missing much.
I just finished Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks, and really enjoyed it. You might want to add that to your list (I haven't read March so I'm not sure how it compares).

You know, sometimes life is just too short to read an uninteresting book, especially when there are so many amazing ones waiting for you.

I can't stand Hawthorne. Virtually nothing in his prose can teach you anything you can't get from more contemporary--and more interesting--sources.

In my experience he's painful to read, and the payoff isn't worth it.
