“War is God’s way of teaching Americans geography.” ~ Ambrose Pierce

The White Tiger won the 2008 Man Booker Prize for fiction.

Meh. It was a decent read, so I'll clap the back of my hand like at a posh golf match.

Yet my vote still goes to A Case of Exploding Mangoes.

I'm almost positive you mean Ambrose Bierce, but that's just a quibble. The quote has made me take up my copy of The Devil's Dictionary again, and I can't thank you enough. I couldn't find the war quote in there, but the book is a complete joy. To wit:

"English, n. A language so haughty and reserved that few writers succeed in getting on terms of familiarity with it."

I love Bierce.
